Summer for me means convertible road trips down the Pacific Coast Highway and golden hour campfires in Joshua Tree. The problem? Most summer hats are a tragedy waiting to happen. Either the brim flops right into your eyes the second the ocean breeze hits, or the straw is so brittle it cracks in your suitcase.
When I saw STEASYLIFE’s Summer Edit—specifically their Botanical Western Cowboy Hats and Artistic Wide-Brim Hats—I wanted to know if they actually held up in the wild, or if they were just pretty studio props.
What the Team is Doing: The Coastline Wind Test & Pyrography Art When I caught up with the STEASYLIFE makers this month, they weren't even in the studio. They had taken two trunks full of wide-brim samples out to the coast to test brim wire structure and crown breathability under harsh midday sun.
Instead of slapping cheap printed ribbons on basic hats, their artisans are hand-etching and embossing woodland ferns, wildflowers, and sunflower motifs directly onto structured, breathable crowns. One team member showed me her sunburned forearms and said, "If the brim can't survive a 20-knot coastal wind while still casting a flattering shadow across your cheekbones, it doesn't make the cut." They spent weeks adjusting the interior sweatbands using soft, moisture-wicking cotton so it never leaves a red mark on your forehead.
On the Road: The Ultimate Sun Chaser I took their Woodland Botanical Western Hat out to Austin and Malibu. The way the harsh summer sunlight filters through the subtle botanical textures and casts dappled shadows on your face is pure magic. It gives you that rugged, vintage California-meets-Texas silhouette without feeling like a costume. Pair it with a bikini or a flowy maxi skirt—it’s officially my summer ride-or-die.
